Shader Notes - Fresnel Effect
July 10, 2020•Updated Feb 17, 2026
When light hits an object, it refracts at a certain angle and passes through, while some of it reflects and bounces off. The Fresnel effect is related to the reflection and refraction of light at specific viewing angles. At certain angles, light does not refract at all and is completely reflected. This is the phenomenon where light reflection varies depending on the viewing angle — similar to how seawater appears opaque from a distance but transparent up close.
